Welcome Students!!

Of our favorite times performing, one is when we're performing for eager young minds. The Manhattan Brass plays for literally thousands of children each year; children from some of the most financially-starved schools in New York City. The Manhattan Brass performs concert/lecture/demonstrations which involve a young audience from the very first note, and take them on a journey through music, history, and perception.

Audience interaction and participation is a big part of the Manhattan Brass's concerts in the schools. The quintet leads informal discussion where students contribute their own musical knowledge to the assembly. Students are taught basic musical elements such as melody and harmony, then encouraged to identify them by participating while the Manhattan Brass performs. The group also takes the time to answer students varied and unique questions. The Manhattan Brass conducts these concerts with practical, contextual references that kids understand and can relate to.

MB’s commitment to improving the public’s knowledge of music began in 1994 when we were asked to design educational programs for violin prodigy Midori's non-profit educational program.

Other past partnerships with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Philharmonic enabled the ensemble to perform for thousands of children throughout New York City in venues ranging from The Juilliard School to the Bronx public schools.

Because of its innovative programming and commitment to education, the quintet's role as a leader in artistic education was acknowledged with an invitation to participate as guest artists/panelists at the Eastman School's inaugural CMA education institute and the CMA (Chamber Music America) National Convention.

In 2004 the quintet created a new children's concert entitled The Cuckoo, which focused on the music of Latin cultures and included narration in both English and Spanish.

MB continues to offer educational programs whenever possible and currently performs concerts and clinics all over the country, collaborating with organizations such as Young Audiences, the Carnegie Hall Classroom Project, the Center for Arts Education, the New School’s Lang College, Bloomingdale House Music School, and the Aspen Music Festival & School.
